The rise in drug overdose deaths in the United States, surpassing 107,000 fatal overdoses in 2021, underscores the urgency of addressing this critical issue. The increasing number of fatalities are attributed to synthetic opioids like illicitly manufactured fentanyl, as well as stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine.

Statistics reveal that more than 46 million individuals aged 12 or older, constituting 16.5% of the US population, met the DSM-5 criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year according to the latest data from the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). However, only a small fraction, approximately 6%, of those with SUD received any form of treatment. Providing comprehensive addiction treatment, which includes FDA-approved medications and behavioral health therapies, has proven effective in saving lives and enhancing treatment retention rates.
