This application provides clinical guidance based on the latest evidence-based recommendations for healthcare providers interested in initiating patients on buprenorphine or naltrexone for the management of opioid use disorder (OUD). It also covers treatment options for OUD with methadone and the utilization of naltrexone for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Additionally, the app offers insights into acute and chronic pain management strategies for patients already prescribed with buprenorphine or naltrexone, along with guidance on medication classes to address acute opioid withdrawal symptoms.

The rise in drug overdose deaths in the United States, surpassing 107,000 fatal overdoses in 2021, underscores the urgency of addressing this critical issue. The increasing number of fatalities are attributed to synthetic opioids like illicitly manufactured fentanyl, as well as stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine.

Statistics reveal that more than 46 million individuals aged 12 or older, constituting 16.5% of the US population, met the DSM-5 criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year according to the latest data from the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). However, only a small fraction, approximately 6%, of those with SUD received any form of treatment. Providing comprehensive addiction treatment, which includes FDA-approved medications and behavioral health therapies, has proven effective in saving lives and enhancing treatment retention rates.

For ease of reference, these algorithms are also available in PDF format and allow for secure text messaging of patient tools to initiate buprenorphine treatment.
